Evaluation System

RULES & REGULATIONS

As an affiliated college of Osmania University, IDEAL Degree College for Women implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for all Undergraduate programs starting from the Academic Year 2016–2017. This system was introduced to offer a more flexible, learner-centric, and internationally recognized approach to higher education.

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in UG Courses

Main Features of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS):
  1. Implementation Across All UG Departments:
All Undergraduate departments under the faculties of Science, Social Sciences, Arts and Commerce in the constituent and affiliated colleges of Osmania University shall participate in the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from the academic year 2016–2017.

  1. Continuous Evaluation:
Under the CBCS framework, students are continuously assessed in all semesters through a combination of Internal Assessment Examinations, assignments, projects and other academic activities to promote consistent academic engagement.
  2. Industry-Relevant Curriculum:
The course content for each UG program is carefully designed and periodically updated to meet the dynamic requirements of the industry, job market, and societal needs, ensuring students acquire relevant knowledge and practical skills.
  3. Credit and Grade Point System:
Each paper or course is assigned a specific number of credits. The marks obtained by a student are converted into grade points and credit points.
    • The academic performance of a student in each semester is expressed as a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA).
    • The combined academic performance across all six semesters of the UG program is expressed as a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Evaluation System

As per the guidelines of Osmania University, the evaluation of each course/paper is divided into two components:

  • 20% of the total marks are allocated for Continuous Internal Assessment (which includes internal examinations, assignments, and other academic activities).
  • The remaining 80% of marks are reserved for the Semester-End University Examinations.

Evaluation Process for Internal Examinations

The following process is systematically followed for conducting internal assessments for each course:

  • There are two internal examinations per semester for each course.
  • The duration of each internal examination is 30 minutes per course.
  • The average of both internal exams is considered for the final internal assessment.
  • Additionally, 5 marks are assigned for course-related assignments.

Step-by-Step Process

As per the guidelines of Osmania University, the evaluation of each course/paper is divided into two components:

  1. Receive the examination schedule from Osmania University through the Almanac (Academic Calendar).
  2. Preparation of question papers by the respective subject faculty members.
  3. Collection of question papers from faculty by the Examination Cell 7 days before the examination.
  4. Room allotment and preparation of seating plan by the In-Charge of the Examination Cell 4 days before the examination.
  5. Printing of question papers and organizing them into a file 2 days before the examination.
  6. Allotment of invigilation duties and intimation to both teaching and non-teaching staff.
  7. Marking of hall ticket numbers on desks using stickers 1 day prior to the examination.
  8. Conduct of the Examination
    1. Display of the seating plan on the notice board 1 hour before the exam.
    2. Distribution of examination material to invigilators 15 minutes before the start of the exam.
    3. Commencement of the examination.
    4. Collection of answer scripts from students by invigilators and arranging them subject-wise in the order of hall ticket numbers.
    5. Sorting of answer scripts subject-wise and section-wise by Examination Cell staff.
  9. Distribution of answer script bundles to the respective faculty 1 day after completion of the examination for evaluation.
  10. Evaluation of answer scripts by faculty members within 7 days of receipt.
  11. Discussion of internal question papers and verification of evaluated answer scripts by students within 3 days of completion of evaluation.
  12. Entry of marks in the designated mark lists, submitted via Google Link to the Examination Cell.
  13. Submission of evaluated answer scripts to the Examination Cell.
  14. Display of final internal marks on the notice board for student verification.
  15. Filing and archiving of question paper copies and a checklist of completed activities.
  16. Final compilation of average marks from the two internal exams and assignment marks, followed by entry of internal marks on the Osmania University website.

Evaluation Method

The evaluation system at IDEAL Degree College for Women, affiliated to Osmania University, follows a structured and transparent process under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The evaluation is based on both internal continuous assessment and semester-end examinations.

Key Guidelines:
  1. Semester-End Examinations for Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC):
The AECC semester-end examination is conducted by Osmania University, and the marks obtained are included in the calculation of Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
  2. Internal Evaluation Pattern for UG Core and Elective Papers (4 and 5 Credit Courses):
    1. Two Internal Assessment Tests of 15 marks each are conducted per semester for each paper.
    2. The average of these two tests is considered for final evaluation.
    3. Additionally, 1 assignment carrying 5 marks is assigned per course.
    4. Each internal assessment test consists of:
      1. 10 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) of 0.5 mark each
      2. 10 Fill-in-the-Blank (FIB) questions of 0.5 mark each
      3. 5 Short Answer Questions of 1 mark each
  3. No Assignment Component for any 3 Credit Core/Elective Course/Paper.
  4. No Internal Examination for Practical Courses:
    1. Practical examinations, each worth 1 credit, are conducted at the end of the semester.
    2. Internal examiners evaluate practicals in I, III and V semesters.
    3. External examiners evaluate practicals in II, IV and VI semesters.

Pattern of Semester-End Examinations:

For Commerce:
  1. 5 Credit Course/Paper (80 Marks):
    1. Section A (20 Marks): 8 Short Answer Questions (at least one from each unit); answer any 5. Each question carries 4 marks.
    2. Section B (60 Marks): 5 Long Answer/Essay type questions, with internal choice (2 to be set per unit). Each question carries 12 marks.
  2. 4 Credit Course/Paper (80 Marks):
    1. Section A (20 Marks): 8 Short Answer Questions (two from each unit); answer any 5. Each carries 4 marks.
    2. Section B (60 Marks): 4 Long Answer/Essay type questions with internal choice (2 per unit). Each carries 15 marks.

For Science:
  1. 4 Credit Course/Paper (80 Marks):
    1. Section A (20 Marks): 8 Short Answer Questions (two from each unit); answer any 5. Each carries 4 marks.
    2. Section B (60 Marks): 4 Long Answer/Essay type questions with internal choice (2 per unit). Each carries 15 marks.
  2. 3 Credit Course/Paper (60 Marks):
    1. Section A (15 Marks): 8 Short Answer Questions (at least two from each unit); answer any 5. Each carries 3 marks.
    2. Section B (45 Marks): 3 Long Answer/Essay type questions with internal choice (2 per unit). Each carries 15 marks.

Final Result Compilation:

The marks secured by students in internal assessments, assignments, seminars, practicals, project work, and semester-end examinations are converted into SGPA and CGPA as per the Osmania University grading system.

Award of Grades, SGPA, CGPA

Credits

Credit refers to the unit of academic measurement for a course or subject. Under these regulations:

  • 1 credit is equivalent to one hour of theory instruction or two hours of practical work per week.

Grade Letters

Grade Letter is an indicator of a student’s performance in a specific course (paper). It represents the range of marks secured by the student, translated into a corresponding letter grade. The available Grade Letters include:
O, A+, A, B+, B, C, D, F.
Each Grade Letter covers a specific range of marks.

  • In the event a student is absent for an examination, the grade ‘Ab’ will be recorded on the marks memo in place of a Grade Letter for that particular course.

Grade Points

Grade Point represents the numerical weightage assigned to each Grade Letter. The Grade Points reflect the performance level corresponding to the marks secured in a course/paper.
For example:

  • Higher marks earn higher Grade Letters and corresponding Grade Points.
  • These Grade Points are multiplied by the credits for the course to calculate the Credit Points.

Credit Points

Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) are computed based on the Credit Points earned across all courses in a semester or throughout the program respectively, providing a quantitative measure of a student’s academic performance.

Details of Awarded Grades Under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

Range of Marks (%) Inference Letter Grade Grade Point
≥ 90 to 100 Outstanding O 10
≥ 75 to < 90 Excellent A+ 9
≥ 60 to < 75 Very Good A 8
≥ 55 to < 60 Good B+ 7
≥ 50 to < 55 Above Average B 6
≥ 45 to < 50 Average C 5
≥ 40 to < 45 Pass D 4
< 40 Fail (Reappear) D 4

Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA)

Credit Points for a Paper:
The Credit Points for each paper are calculated by multiplying the number of credits assigned to the paper by the Grade Point secured in that paper.

Credit Points for a Paper = No. of Credits×Grade Point secured

Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA):

The SGPA reflects a student’s academic performance in a given semester. It is computed based on the total credit points earned in all courses during the semester, divided by the total number of credits assigned to those courses.

SGPA Formula:

SGPA = ( Grade Point for each Course × Credits for the Course ) ( Total Credits in the Semester )

Important Notes:
  • CGPA is calculated only when the candidate has passed all theory and practical papers in all semesters.
  • Like SGPA, CGPA is also computed up to two decimal points.
  • The final result declared at the end of the program is expressed in the form of CGPA.
